Dan Katz

Dan Katz (b. 1981, New York) is a self-taught 2D comic-style portrait artist whose practice has grown out of a lifelong dedication to drawing. In 2010 he began focusing on faces, following a guiding principle: do not draw the subject, draw the shape inside the subject. His imagery often reflects the iconography of popular culture such as film, television and music, paying tribute to characters that have accompanied him since childhood. For Katz, drawing is both a form of refuge and an act of honoring the figures that shaped his imagination.

He works primarily with black ink on white paper and later refines his pieces digitally, combining hand-drawn immediacy with the possibilities of Adobe Photoshop. This blending of techniques gives his portraits their distinctive quality, at once raw and graphic, intimate yet iconic.
His work has been exhibited internationally with solo and group shows in Los Angeles, New York, Brooklyn and Shanghai, and more recently in Vietnam at Space Garden in Da Nang and Cham Chi Club in Hoi An.
